Catering for students in Years 1 to 8, St Joseph’s School in Upper Hutt was founded more than 100 years ago and has a roll in excess of 400 students. As part of the Archdiocese of Wellington’s capital works programme, the school was earmarked for a significant transformation to improve the spaces for staff and students alike.

The initial phase of the project involved the provision of a new learning support coordinator space, along with a reconfiguration of the administration building to include changes to the main entrance for accessibility, improvements to the main reception area, improved visibility to the sick bay for health and safety purposes, increased staff amenities and staff room, and upgrades to the staff and children’s bathroom facilities.

The next phase of the transformation at St Joseph’s was to provide four new classrooms to counter the school’s growing roll. The clever use of partitions and sliding doors have allowed for multiple configurations of the classroom spaces, while also including a new kitchen for the children to practice their cooking skills in.

Urban Outcomes also undertook fire reinstatement works to three classrooms and associated spaces that were damaged by a deliberately lit fire at the school in February 2022.

St Joseph’s School is one of the projects forming part of Urban Outcomes’ four-year partnership with the Archdiocese of Wellington where we are providing Engineer to the Contract, Project Management and Quantity Surveying services across their programme of works.
